Alcohol is widely consumed in Africa. The World Health Organization estimates that in 2023, the following 10 nations will have the highest rates of alcohol consumption per person aged 15 and over:
10. Botswana- 8.46 liters p.a
Botswana has a high incidence of alcohol consumption, which can be attributed to St Louis, the nation’s inexpensive and widely accessible beer. A low alcohol concentration of 3.5% to 4.7% can be found in the beer.
9. Gabon- 10.32 liters p.a
Beer is preferred by Gabonians over wine (12%), spirits (20%), and wine (68%), with Rehab being the most widely consumed beer. Gabon is the place to be if you like booze because it has the least expensive alcohol in Africa.

7. Burundi- 11.23 liters p.a
Very few Burundians consume alcohol, even wine. Beer comes in second at 19%, with other locally made beverages being favored by 81%. The gurdwara, or banana wine, is their preferred beverage.
6. Namibia- 11.62 liters p.a
In Namibia, beer makes up 67% of all alcoholic drinks consumed, followed by spirits (20%), wine (7%), and other locally manufactured beverages (6%). Their most popular alcoholic beverage is Windhoek Lager.
5. Rwanda- 11.90 liter p.a
Beer accounts for 8% of the total, while handmade alcoholic beverages like Ugwagwa (banana beer) and Ibuki Ikigagee (fermented honey drink produced from dry sorghum) make up the remaining 92%.
4. Kenya- 12.21 liters p.a
Kenya’s most popular beer brand, Tusker Beer, accounts for 43% of all sales.
3. Uganda- 13.93 liters p.a
Alcohol consumption overall is made up of 94% domestically brewed brands, 2% wine, and 4% beer. With a 42% alcohol level, Uganda Waragi is the most well-known alcoholic beverage in the country and among the alcoholic spirits with the highest alcohol percentage globally.
2. Cameroon- 15.65 liters p.a
Cameroonian people like regionally produced alcohol. Even though only a small portion of Cameroonians consume wine, it is not as common as beer.
1. Nigeria- 18.28-liter p.a
16% of all alcoholic drinks consumed in Nigeria are beer. The most well-known alcoholic beverage, Ogogoro, contains 30% to 60% alcohol, while other locally manufactured beverages have an average alcohol content of 84%.
