The recent images of men detained and stripped down in Gaza were ‘deeply disturbing,’ expressed by US State Department spokesperson Matt Miller on Monday, according to CNN. In response to inquiries about the unsettling photos, Miller reiterated the United States’ commitment to seeking comprehensive information from the Israeli government.
“We are seeking answers about the status of the individuals in the photos, the circumstances around the images, and ‘how ultimately they became public,'” he stated, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus, a spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), asserted to CNN last week that the detained men were “members or suspected members of Hamas, ‘without clothes to make sure they’re not carrying explosives.'” This explanation, however, has faced contradiction from Hani Almadhoun, director of philanthropy for the US arm of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA USA).
In an interview with CNN on Friday, Almadhoun revealed, “I knew a dozen people pictured in circulating images, including my brother — all of whom were civilians.” This contradicts the initial claim that the detained individuals were associated with Hamas.
The photos in question, circulating on social media last Thursday, portrayed a distressing scene of mass detention by the Israeli military. Men were made to strip down to their underwear, kneel on the street, wear blindfolds, and pack into the cargo bed of a military vehicle. While the exact circumstances and dates of these detentions remain unclear, some detainees’ identities were confirmed by colleagues or family members.
