Reports from Lagos indicate that protests have broken out in Akwanga and other parts of Nasarawa State as a result of the recent judgment by the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal (GEPT) in Lafia.
According to Lagos Reporters, supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Governor Abdullahi Sule have taken to the streets to express their dissatisfaction with the tribunal’s decision to nullify Sule’s election and declare David Ombugadu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the rightful winner.
The tribunal, in a split decision on October 2, 2023, ruled that Ombugadu had provided sufficient evidence of electoral irregularities. The tribunal also ordered Sule to be immediately removed from office.
Despite this, the APC and Sule have rejected the judgment and plan to appeal to the Court of Appeal.
During a solidarity march in Akwanga, APC supporters carried banners with slogans such as “Akwanga people stand with the dissenting judgment” and “Sule is our governor.” The protesters chanted phrases like “No to injustice” and “Tribunal must reverse its judgment.”
