Murtala Rufai, a lecturer, has alleged that there are bandit families that have been operating for over 70 years in the northwest and that they evolved into modern banditry in 2011.
Rufai made this statement in an interview with TVC. He emphasized the need to comprehend the diverse typologies, differences, and historical trajectories of these groups for an effective response. He outlined a nuanced approach, recognizing that some bandits require decisive action, while others might be amenable to dialogue.
Rufai also acknowledged individuals forced into banditry. According to him, a comprehensive understanding of these distinctions is vital for addressing the issue.
In Rufai’s words:
There are lots of bandit families in northwest that have been operating for over 70 years and with the emergence of modern banditry in 2011, we have seen these families transforming into the modern act of banditry.
It is only when we understand these typologies, these differences, and also these histories and trajectories, no way we can address the issue without understanding this. This means there are quite a number of bandits that need to be absolutely and completely wiped out.
Also, there are those that need to be talked to and they will listen and there are also those that are into the act because they were forced to be into it”.
