It has been revealed by Opeyemi Bamidele, the leader of the Senate, that the National Assembly is working on creating legislation to establish state police forces and improve intelligence gathering as a means of combating banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism.
During a ceremony at the Federal University, Oye Ekiti, Ekiti State, Bamidele spoke on behalf of all the individuals who received honorary doctorate degrees. He also encouraged local government council authorities, traditional rulers, and community leaders to organize local vigilantes, hunters, and capable young individuals to protect their communities and territories.
Bamidele stated that the National Assembly is committed to providing the necessary legislative framework to strengthen community policing and multi-level security architecture, more than ever before.
“Developing such a legal framework has become imperative at this time in our history. This plan is in the overriding public interest of safeguarding the security of lives and property, the stability of our democracy and the progress of our fatherland.
“The cases of abduction, killings, maiming, population displacement and disruption of socio-economic activities in Benue, Ekiti, Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi, Nasarawa, Ondo, Plateau, Sokoto and Zamfara in recent times have called for an urgent and decisive action by all state actors and other stakeholders.”
Apart from Bamidele, who received an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Private Law, the university conferred similar honours on the Chairman, the Senate Committee on Appropriations, Senator Olamilekan Adeola and Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Navy, Hon. Yusuf Daji, among others.
