Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani claims that Nigeria’s Firearms Act has remained unchanged for more than three decades, rendering it obsolete and out of sync with international norms. He’s worried that under the current legal setup, individuals caught with illegal firearms face minimal consequences, such as a mere N50,000 fine in court.
He mentioned that the issue becomes more significant when we look at the findings of the United Nations Regional Center for Disarmament in Africa, which showed about 200 million illegal guns circulating in Nigeria out of the 350 million in West Africa.
According to his own statement in an interview with Channels TV,
”The last time the Firearms Act was amended in Nigeria was over 30 years ago. And if you look at the fire arms act in Nigeria. It is obsolete and it’s not in line with the global best practice everywhere in the world. Not even in Africa. Nigeria is the only country where you can be arrested for illegal firearms and you can pay a N50,000 fine in court and you can go home.
And that’s why I stress the importance of the United Nations Regional Center for Disarmament’s report stating that Nigeria has around 200 million illegal firearms, out of the 350 million circulating in West Africa, but unfortunately, it seems like nobody pays attention to it.
