The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has been requested by human rights attorney Femi Falana, SAN, to take into consideration enacting specific measures against President Macky Sall of Senegal and members of his administration, such as asset freezes and travel restrictions.
The call, according to Daily Post, is a reaction to President Sall’s recent decision to postpone the nation’s elections due to a disagreement over candidates’ eligibility.
To address the growing concerns about Senegal’s human rights and rule of law, Falana demanded an immediate extra-ordinary meeting of ECOWAS. He voiced fear that President Sall would be purposefully using the nation’s constitution to hold onto power against the will of the people if the elections were postponed.
Falana stressed in a statement that the targeted penalties on President Sall and his government officials comply with the terms of the treaties and protocols of the ECOWAS, citing in particular Article 45 (2) of the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance.
