In a devastating turn of events, the Eastern Cape Transport Department has initiated a case of culpable homicide with the Bizana Police Station, following a fatal collision involving acclaimed music legend Mbongeni Ngema. The incident occurred as Ngema was returning from a funeral, with the sedan he was traveling in colliding with a truck, resulting in his untimely demise.
Transport authorities reveal that the collision took place on a stretch of road notorious for its safety concerns. The sedan, carrying Ngema and three others, met a tragic fate, leaving the music icon fatally injured. Despite efforts to save him, Ngema succumbed to his injuries at Adelaide Tambo Memorial Hospital in Mbizana. Miraculously, the three other occupants of the vehicle emerged from the accident unharmed.
Expressing condolences, Unathi Bhinqose, the provincial transport spokesperson, conveyed the sympathies of the Eastern Cape Department of Transport and its MEC, Xolile Nqatha, to the grieving Ngema family. Bhinqose also extended well wishes for a speedy and full recovery to the two individuals currently hospitalized as a result of the collision.
In response to this tragic incident, Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga is taking proactive measures. Later on Thursday, she will lead a road safety operation on the notorious stretch of road where the collision occurred.
