The All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced that the attempt by President Bola Tinubu to reconcile the conflict between Rivers State Governor Simi Fubara and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has failed.
Tony Okocha, the caretaker chairman of the APC in Rivers, confirmed during a press conference at the APC national secretariat that the reconciliation process between the two parties had broken down irreconcilably.
President Tinubu’s intervention, which involved a meeting with Fubara and Wike at the presidential villa in Abuja, had initially raised hopes for an end to the bitter dispute in the state.
However, over the past four days, there has been an escalation of tensions. This includes the demolition of the state House of Assembly complex and the defection of 27 assembly members, who are loyal to Wike, to the APC.
Tony Okocha dismissed the recent budget passed by the Ehie-led faction of the assembly as “illegal” and said it would not stand. He also confirmed ongoing efforts to woo Wike to the APC, emphasising that the former governor would automatically become the party’s leader in the state upon joining.
