Recently, the Governorship Election Tribunal in Sokoto heard a petition to nullify the 2023 election of Dauda Lawal as the governor of Zamfara State.
The petition was filed by the former governor, Bello Matawalle, but has since been dismissed by the tribunal. Lawal was declared the winner of the election on March 18, 2023, by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), while Matawalle ran under the All Progressives Congress (APC) platform. The tribunal’s three-member panel, led by Justice Cordelia Ogadi, reserved judgment on August 21, 2023, and has now made its ruling. Further details are yet to come.
