According to Sahara Reporters, the Catholic Bishops of the Lagos Ecclesiastical Province, representing the Lagos Archdiocese, Ijebu Ode, and Abeokuta Dioceses, have unequivocally rejected the blessing of same-sex marriages. This declaration came in a communique issued after their January 26 plenary meeting in Lagos, signed by Archbishop of Lagos, Most Rev Alfred Martins, and Bishop of Ijebu-Ode, Most Rev Francis Adesina.
In alignment with the stance of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), the Lagos Ecclesiastical Province affirmed their opposition to the blessing of same-sex unions. This decision stands in stark contrast to a landmark ruling by the Vatican on December 18, 2023, which permitted Catholic priests to administer blessings to same-sex couples under certain conditions.
The Vatican’s doctrinal office, approved by Pope Francis, outlined guidelines allowing blessings for couples in irregular situations, including same-sex partnerships. However, it emphasized that such blessings should not be conducted in conjunction with civil union ceremonies or weddings.
While a blessing in the Catholic Church signifies a prayer for divine favor upon individuals, the Pope’s approval of same-sex blessings sparked controversy and diverse opinions within the Catholic community.
In solidarity with the broader Catholic teachings on marriage and human sexuality, the bishops affirmed the Church’s traditional view of marriage as the sacred union between a man and a woman, conducive to procreation.
