The Vice President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Tommy Etim, has stated that the TUC will not participate in the nationwide strike proposed by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC). Etim cited the “lack of decision-making” as the reason for pulling out of the planned strike. He emphasized the need for collective agreement between labour unions before deciding to embark on any protest. Etim stated that the decision was not taken collectively, so they could not join the protest.

The TUC and NLC had issued a joint statement with a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, which will expire soon. Etim stated that both leaders needed to review the situation and agree on the way forward before convening their respective NEC meetings. Meanwhile, the NLC has rejected the advice of the Department of State Services (DSS) to shelve the nationwide protest scheduled for February 27 and 28. The NLC president has described the advice as unsolicited and added that they would proceed with the protest due to the hardship currently being faced by most Nigerians.
