Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed his intention to run for president in 2027, despite the Supreme Court’s decision upholding President Bola Tinubu’s victory in the 2023 election. At a press briefing held in Abuja on Monday, Atiku stated that he will not give up his efforts to deepen Nigeria’s democracy and push for political and economic restructuring in the country. He added that he will continue to work with other Nigerians towards achieving these goals.
Atiku, who, before the 2023 election, had lost five presidential elections, insisted that Tinubu was not qualified to contest the 2023 poll and accused the Supreme Court and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of supporting “illegality, identity theft, impersonation, forgery of certificates and perjury.”
He said that the Supreme Court’s judgment, while final, left “much to be desired.”
Recall that on Thursday, the Supreme Court dismissed the appeal filed by Atiku against the election of President Bola Tinubu.
In a unanimous verdict, the court ruled that the appeal filed by Atiku lacked merit.
“On the whole, it is my view that there is no merit in this appeal,” Justice Inyang Okoro said.
