On Thursday, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) announced its participation in the United Nations Global Compact. This marks the first time a state-owned oil company has joined the global initiative. The United Nations Global Compact is a commitment by companies worldwide to develop sustainable corporate policies and practices.
During a ceremony at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, the NNPCL signed a letter of commitment. Mele Kyari, the NNPC Group CEO Ltd, signed on behalf of the company. Kyari emphasized that the NNPCL’s participation in the Global Compact demonstrates Nigeria’s dedication to collaborating with global partners for an equitable energy transition.
The NNPCL upholds the Ten Principles of the United Nations Global Compact on human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption. Therefore, this is an important step towards creating a more sustainable future.
Kyari has expressed NNPC Ltd.’s commitment to integrating the United Nations Global Compact principles into their business strategy, culture, and daily operations. They also plan to collaborate on projects supporting the broader development of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The Executive Director of the United Nations Global Compact Network in Nigeria, Naomi Nwokolo, praised NNPC Ltd.’s decision to participate in the Global Compact as a crucial step in promoting ethical business conduct, environmental stewardship, and social responsibility.
It was highlighted that Nigeria plays a significant role as a crude oil producer in Africa, and the adoption of renewable energy would have a positive impact on sustainability in the country, the continent, and the world as a whole.
