According to sources close to the presidency, President Bola Tinubu is planning to reshuffle his cabinet shortly. It has been reported that some appointees are struggling in their portfolios and are not properly prepared for the job.
The president had warned cabinet members and other top appointees against underperformance in November. He had stated that a bond would be signed and any member who failed to meet the objectives would be asked to leave.
The current corruption scandal related to two ministers, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo and Dr Betta Edu, could be used by the president to implement the changes. Edu has already been suspended from her position while Tunji-Ojo has been linked to a firm that received consultancy fees related to the National Social Register contract. Up to five ministers could potentially be dropped. Furthermore, a new minister is expected to be named for the Ministry of Labour and Employment following the resignation of Simon Bako Lalong, a former Plateau State Governor, who stepped down to become a senator.
