According to senior administration officials, visa sanctions have been imposed by the United States on individuals from Liberia who are suspected of undermining democracy in the country.
The United States announced a visa restriction policy on Thursday, targeting individuals who are believed to be undermining democracy in Liberia.
The policy was made by Secretary of State Antonio Blinken and will be implemented before the upcoming elections next month. Liberia is due to hold general elections on October 10th, which will determine its president, members of the House of Representatives, and half of the Senate.
According to Blinken, “Under this policy, the United States will apply visa restrictions for those responsible or complicit in undermining democracy in Liberia.”
According to the statement, any effort to subvert democracy in Liberia would entail tampering with or disrupting the electoral process, using force to prevent individuals from peacefully assembling and associating and obstructing political parties, voters, civil society, or media from expressing their opinions or engaging in any other conduct intended to inappropriately affect the election’s result.
US Secretary of State Blinken has announced a new policy that may restrict some family members of convicted individuals and those who undermine democracy in Liberia during the 2023 elections from obtaining US visas. The Secretary emphasized that this policy is not aimed at the people or government of Liberia but rather shows the United States’ support for fair and free elections that uphold democracy and the rule of law.
