A large billboard endorsing President Bola Tinubu for the 2027 presidential election has sparked a flurry of discussions in the Federal Capital Territory, particularly along the bustling Area One sector.

The billboard, which displays images of President Tinubu and his wife Remi, carries the caption “Grassroots support for Tinubu 2027, the 1019 initiative.”

This preemptive show of support comes despite no official statement from President Tinubu regarding his intent to seek a second term.

Since assuming office on May 29, 2023, Tinubu’s administration has been characterized by significant and sometimes controversial policies, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the national currency, which have led to widespread economic challenges and heightened public unrest.

The public’s reaction to the billboard has been mixed, with some viewing it as an early strategic move, while others express concern over its timing, especially in light of recent #EndBadGovernance protests that swept across the country from August 1 to 10.

These protests were largely fueled by dissatisfaction with the current administration’s policies, which many believe have exacerbated the hardships faced by ordinary Nigerians.

Moreover, the billboard’s appearance comes at a time some stakeholders in the northern regions are alleging that President Tinubu’s appointments have favored his own geopolitical zone at the expense of the north.

This has led to a resurgence of calls for major opposition parties like the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Labour Party (LP), and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to form a coalition to challenge Tinubu’s potential candidacy in the upcoming election.
