President Bola Tinubu has showered praise on the renowned Professor of Semiotics and African Literature and his longtime associate, Professor Ropo Sekoni, as they turn 80 years of age.
While acknowledging Professor Sekoni’s significant contributions to the restoration of democracy in Nigeria and the global body of knowledge, the President wishes him many more years to witness the new Nigeria underway.
“Today I celebrate and congratulate my long-time friend, comrade and associate, Professor Ropo Sekoni, on his 80th anniversary. Reaching the age of 80 is a wonderful gift from God. I join his family and our mutual friends in this important milestone.
“Along with other pro-democracy activists, Professor Sekoni and I fought stridently at home and abroad for the end of military rule and the rebirth of democracy in our land after the annulment of the June 12 elections. from 1993.
“Professor Sekoni was a benchmark in that fight. He is also an invaluable sounding board and support system for us in government,” the president said.
The president acknowledges the glory of God in the life of the respected scholar.
“We thank God for making it possible for Professor Sekoni to reach this important age in good health and we pray to the Almighty God to give him more years to witness the new Nigeria we are building together where peace, security and prosperity He will reign supreme,” he said.
