The Supreme Court has ruled that it cannot review any new matter concerning President Bola Tinubu’s alleged forgery of a certificate from Chicago State University. Justice John Inyang Okoro, leading a 7-man panel, made this pronouncement while delivering a judgment on a case brought by Atiku against Tinubu.
He pointed out that any attempt to introduce new evidence about the authenticity of Tinubu’s diploma would only prolong the judgment and take the country back to the old dark days.
Justice Okoro emphasized that the Supreme Court has no right to accept fresh evidence since it would be unfortunate to hear election petitions until the end of the tenure of the person whose election was being challenged. Atiku’s attempt to introduce new evidence to extend the time to adjudicate the case was therefore deemed inadmissible by the Presidential Election Court and the Supreme Court.
