Dr Sam Amadi, Director of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thought has hit out at leaders of ECOWAS, claiming they have lost credibility.
Dr Amadi said the only time ECOWAS leaders come out smoking is when there is military coup in the West African region.
Dr Amadi said this while reacting to the violent protests in Senegal after President Macky Sall postponed the country’s presidential elections.
He said in an interview on Democracy Today, a programme on in AIT:
“The problem with ECOWAS is that they have lost credibility. They have not done good peer review. They have not taken seriously the protocols of good democracy and elections. Only time you hear ECOWAS leaders come smoking is when there is a real military coup.
They have not held themselves to higher standards genuinely. And so the ECOWAS rhetoric doesn’t sound credible and their actions are weak.”
“So it falls back to the citizens of Senegal and that’s the essence of the message by the intellectuals and activists, that they have to hold strong and maybe a global ECOWAS and civil society will put their voice strong and then we hope that maybe the international community will also come in.”
