The Northern Traditional Council, chaired by His Eminence Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto, has issued a stark warning regarding Nigeria’s current state.
According to leadership, with challenges of insecurity, poverty, and unemployment, particularly in the Northern region, the nation teeters on the brink of a crisis, ready to explode if urgent actions are not taken.
During the sixth executive committee meeting of the Northern Traditional Council held in Kaduna, Sultan Abubakar emphasized the gravity of the situation.
He highlighted the efforts made by traditional rulers, religious leaders, and state governors to pacify the masses and mitigate unrest.
However, he expressed concern that these efforts might soon prove futile as people grow increasingly agitated and disillusioned.
“People are quiet for a reason,” Sultan Abubakar stated, “but their patience is wearing thin. They are hungry, angry, and desperate for change. We, as traditional and religious leaders, have a responsibility to reassure them, but words alone cannot alleviate their suffering.”
The Sultan underscored the pressing need for job creation, particularly for the millions of idle youths across the country.
He stressed that prolonged neglect of this issue could have dire consequences, urging political leaders to prioritize the welfare of the people.
“We cannot afford to ignore the plight of our youth,” Sultan Abubakar asserted.
“We must work together to provide them with opportunities and hope for a better future.”
Addressing the issue of insecurity, the Sultan acknowledged the complexities involved but emphasized the importance of decisive action.
He called for collaboration between traditional leaders, governors, and security agencies to address the root causes of insecurity and restore peace to the region.
Furthermore, Sultan Abubakar emphasized the need for the implementation of solutions, lamenting that despite the availability of remedies, their execution remains lacking.
He called on various stakeholders, including the Coalition of Northern Groups and the Arewa Consultative Forum, to come together and chart a course for progress.
Sultan Abubakar highlighted the critical role of education, healthcare, and socioeconomic development in addressing the challenges facing the nation.
He expressed optimism that concerted efforts and collaboration among leaders and stakeholders could lead to positive change.
