He National Board of Technical Education (NBTE) has upgraded its College of Health Sciences to College of Health Sciences and Technology, the college’s registrar revealed.
The registrar, Nura Garba, told Newslodge on Friday that the NBTE inspected the school’s teaching and non-teaching staff, physical structures and teaching equipment before updating it.
“The NBTE has also approved the school to obtain a diploma and a Higher National Diploma (HND) from approximately nine courses at the university.
“With this development, the state will improve its health care workforce in all 287 political districts and eliminate areas to address the death rate in the state through adequate manpower.
He said the state government has also announced a monthly stipend for the state’s indigenous students and a tuition fee subsidy for in-state students.

“All Jigawa State University students receive a monthly stipend of 3,000 naira as pocket money. A Jigawa student will pay only one school fee, while the rest of the academic session will be free, Garba said.
Garba, however, said the university, founded in 1989, was not without its challenges. He said the new administration faced challenges at the university that must be addressed to effectively run the health institution.
“The university is now facing a shortage of women’s shelters due to the increase in various admissions.
“One of the women’s hostels built in the former Kano State has a crack and the university authorities have evacuated the students to safer buildings. This has compounded the challenge for university hostels.
“With the new development, the university will have more admissions and this has resulted in increased demand from teachers for physical structures to accommodate the new entrance, to which we believe the government is responding appropriately.
“The improvement of the school was achieved thanks to the political will of the governor, who stood strong to ensure that the university trained more health workers to address the shortage of health workers in the state,” said Mr. Garba .
