A former Senator who represented Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani in a post he made on his official X handle aired his views on the creation of the State Police. As a result of the insecurity issues in the past years, some Nigerian citizens and politicians have called for the creation of State Police by the Federal Government, arguing that it will go a long way in tackling some of the security issues in the country.
Shehu Sani however revealed that he is not in support of creating a state police because it will be an avenue for the respective state Governors to oppress people they see as threats. The former Senator argued that what will the state police solve that the Nigerian military and civil defense cannot? He claimed that the idea is a mirage that won’t meet the expectations of Nigerians.
Hear him, “The idea that the State Police will solve all the security problems in the Country is a mirage. What magic can the state police perform that the military, police, and civil defense couldn’t? The State police will simply be an armed wing of the ruling party of each state. It’s a recipe for anarchy.”
He also added, “The State Police will be used by the Governors to persecute the opposition, to harass ‘non-indigenes’, to rig elections and to counter the federal police in case of conflict of interest between the federal government and the state. Most of the state ruling party thugs will be recruited into the state police.”
