Speaking at a press conference, Lavrov accused the Western powers of “teetering dangerously on the brink of a direct military clash between nuclear powers,” adding that such a conflict would be “fraught with catastrophic consequences.”
Lavrov’s comments come as tensions between Russia and the West continue to rise over the conflict in Ukraine. The Russian foreign minister singled out the United States, Britain, and France as the “key sponsors of the criminal Kyiv regime” and the “main initiators of various provocative steps.”
Lavrov warned of “serious strategic risks” in the West’s support for Ukraine, stating that it could lead to an increase in the level of nuclear danger.
The United States, Britain, and France have all provided military aid to Ukraine in its conflict with Russian-backed separatists in the country’s east. Russia has repeatedly accused the West of meddling in its affairs and has threatened to take military action if it perceives its security interests to be threatened.
