Vice President Kashim Shettima has tasked members of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms to develop a robust roadmap that will transform the country’s economy.
The vice president delivered the charge today upon receiving in audience the members of the Committee headed by the President, Taiwo Oyedeleat the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
According to Mr. Shettima, “the task ahead is enormous; I think you have the best brains to put together a strong roadmap that will reposition our economy and address some of the fundamental issues that underlie our fiscal and tax policies; Fiscal and tax policies are key to the realization of the economic development of any nation.
“I think they will come up with a road map to save our nation. We are in a big mess, but I have confidence in his team. This is a great nation shackled by bad governance, shackled by many challenges, and my director is a man of courage and conviction; He is a progressive man in the Nigerian political space.”
Speaking about the importance of fiscal policy and tax reforms, the vice president noted that it is a powerful tool for resource mobilization and as such charged the committee with making recommendations that can be delivered quickly in light of the current economic realities of the nation.
Although he assured them of the cooperation of the National Economic Council, he said, “our attention should be largely focused on domestic resource mobilization, especially given the trends in the world today; Even the largest economies in the world are facing this reality.”
The Vice President opined that fiscal policy and tax reforms are essential to satisfy national aspirations, and this is also taking on global dimensions with the global realignment of forces with the rise of the BRICS and current geopolitics.
Mr. Shettima praised the composition of the committee, stating: “I think the composition of this committee testifies to the seriousness that the president takes in his mandate. I’m honestly proud of you. I personally know some of the members of this committee, who are men and women of impeccable character, high integrity, committed and patriotic.”
In his remarks, the President’s Special Adviser on Revenue, Zaccheus Adedeji, stated that the Presidential Committee would be interested in working with the National Economic Council (CNE), which is chaired by the Vice President, “to ensure effective collaboration with subnational governments. who are key stakeholder groups in the task before the committee.
Earlier, Oyedele revealed that committee members were “excited by this opportunity to help our country redefine and reshape a new fiscal policy framework that is right for our nation to prosper and deliver the Nigeria we want for our people to flourish in.” their efforts.”
“We are focused on our mandate as indicated by Mr. President, which covers tax governance, revenue transformation and tax competitiveness and the facilitation of economic growth.”
He assured that the committee would engage with Nigerians both at home and abroad, as well as with all segments of society.
In addition, he expressed the committee’s willingness to collaborate with subnational governments through the NEC to achieve the committee’s mandate.
In the Presidential Committee delegation were Kyari A. Bukar, Tayo Aduloju, Ismaila Zakari, Abiola Sanni, Chinyere Almona, Abubakar Suleiman, Bamate Ogara-Lawson, Taminu Yakubu and Muhammad Nami.
