Jonathan stressed the importance of ensuring that state police forces are not politicized and are used solely for maintaining law and order without bias towards any political party. He highlighted the critical nature of the issue, stating that the debate on whether to establish state police has already been settled, and the focus should now shift to the operational aspects.
Vanguard reported that the specifically pointed out concerns related to elections and the role of the police in maintaining security during voting processes. Jonathan called for a review of INEC’s polling booth setup, advocating for a model similar to what he observed in other countries where polling centers within schools accommodate multiple polling units, enhancing efficiency and transparency.
“Even in polling units in our country, this is the only country I visited that has isolated polling units. Most other countries I go to observe elections, they have polling centers in a primary school or secondary school, and within that polling center, they have five to ten polling units within the center,” Jonathan explained, drawing comparisons with international electoral practices.
