A frobeat singer Seun Anikulapo-Kuti has said he doesn’t believe in DNA tests. He made this statement on Monday 12 February alongside his wife Yetunde as guests on the Valentine’s edition of the TVC programme, Your View.
Seun based his position on the conviction that it is unfounded. He also underlined that the only person who can be certain that a child is their real parent is that child’s mother. Seun claims that bloodlines are only passed down through mothers in historical African societies, as is the case in all matrilineal communities.
“This was known 400–500 years ago by African males. However, we African males are starting to act as though we have no idea what is going on. Only your sister’s offspring inherit from you in Africa. Since they are the only people you can be certain are blood relatives.
Because he is unsure, the heir to the throne is the sister’s child rather than his own. Africans have known from ancient times that a person’s lineage is matrilineal, meaning that a kid is descended from their mother. You know it’s your sister’s child because it’s your blood, even though it’s not the child of your sister’s spouse. You don’t know if the kids your brother had are descended from you. He said, “You are not even certain that your own children are yours.”
