House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas condemned the killing of two people in the Kofar Gayan area of Zaria, Kaduna state, during an attack by suspected terrorists on Saturday night.
According to a statement signed by the speaker’s media assistant, Musa Krishi, he said the suspected terrorists invaded the area, shooting sporadically, killing people and kidnapping others.
The killings, which occurred just over 24 hours after the deaths of several people during the collapse of parts of Zaria’s Central Mosque, were unfortunate and abhorrent, the statement said.
“Expressing disgust at the killings of two innocent people, President Abbas noted with concern the recurring attacks in and around parts of Zaria in recent years.
“The lives of Nigerians, wherever they are, must be protected, hence the need for security agencies to up their game in protecting Nigerians and their property.
Abbas, who represents the federal Zaria constituency, called for a thorough investigation into the attack and killings to find out who was responsible.
Mr. Tajudeen noted that the people of Zaria love peace and have lived in peace for years, saying that bandit activities should not be allowed to disrupt the tranquility of the ancient city.
“The attack that led to the death of our two innocent brothers in Kofar Gayan was most calamitous, horrendous, tragic, appalling and disgusting.
“It was very unfortunate that when innocent people were carrying out their normal and legitimate activities, others planned evil to disturb the peace that everyone enjoyed.
“The action of those behind this cowardly act is condemned, and I call on law enforcement agencies to take immediate action to apprehend the perpetrators. This evil act must not be allowed to go unchecked.
“My heart goes out to the families of those who lost loved ones. I pray that Allah (SWT) grants the late Jannatul Firdaus and gives the families the strength to bear the painful and irreparable loss,” said Mr.
He also took pity on the Kaduna State Governmentthe Emir of Zazzau, His Royal Highness Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, and the people of Zaria for the unfortunate incident, the statement said.
Kaduna is one of the Nigerian states terrorized by terrorists, commonly called bandits. Murder and kidnapping for ransom are common across the state, including Zaria, the state’s largest local government area.
Terrorists target peasants from vulnerable communities in the state, and many have been victims of kidnappers. Some were killed in captivity, while others were released after a ransom was paid.
Insecurity has not abated despite the Nigerian government’s efforts to control crime.
