Police in Nigeria’s southeastern Enugu state killed two suspected kidnappers on Sunday in a forest around Centenary City along the Enugu/Port Harcourt highway in South Enugu Local Government Area of the State.
Police spokesman in the state, Daniel Ndukwe, in a statement late Monday, said police officers also rescued a kidnapped male victim around 8pm when they raided the suspects’ hideout in the woods.
Ndukwe, deputy superintendent of police, said the operation was in response to a distress call that the victim had been abducted along Agbani Road in the council area.
The police spokesman said the officers came from the Awkunanaw Police Division Special Forces Unit and State Police Command Tactical Teams.
He said the combined team was led by the deputy police commissioner in charge of operations, Olasoji Akinbayo.

Ndukwe said upon reaching the criminal hideout; the suspects opened fire on the officers, who also fired back, resulting in a heavy firefight.
“One of the malefactors, simply identified as ‘Baron,’ was taken down on the spot in the ensuing firefight, while others escaped with varying degrees of gunshot wounds,” he said.
The police spokesman added that a subsequent pursuit of the fleeing suspects on Monday morning led to the discovery of the body of one of the thugs killed by operatives during the shootout.

The body of the thug, identified as Chukwunonso, also known as “Nolly”, was discovered in the woods where the shooting took place, police said.
“The two neutralized members of the criminal gang have been on the Command’s criminal watch list,” he said.
A locally made revolver loaded with four cartridges, a locally made pistol and a black Lexus 350 SUV belonging to the rescued victim were recovered from the suspects, according to police.
Enugu State Police Commissioner Kanayo Uzuegbu praised officers for quickly adapting to their new crime-fighting strategies, Mr. Ndukwe said.
Mr. Uzuegbu charged officers and other state police personnel to keep up the pace against criminals.
The police commissioner promised that under his administration, criminals would have “no breathing room” in the state.
