He Akwa Ibom State Government has approved 2 billion naira in financial support for government workers and retirees to cushion the effects of economic hardship caused by the removal of the fuel subsidy by the federal government.
The approval was given at the state Executive Council meeting, chaired by Governor Umo Eno, on Thursday in Uyo, according to a statement from Information and Strategy Commissioner Ini Ememobong.
The financial support will last for three months.
The prices of goods and services have continued to rise in Nigeria and many families have been thrown into poverty and severe hardship since President Bola Tinubu announced the government’s withdrawal of the subsidy in May.
The Nigerian government handed over billions of naira to state governments to enable them to provide some aid to the poor and vulnerable.
The Akwa Ibom state government said it received 2 billion naira and 7,200 bags of rice from the federal government.
“A total of 100,000 bags of rice will be distributed throughout the state. Forty bags per village for the 2,272 villages included in the bulletin and other strategic groups,” Ememobong said.

In addition to the proposed financial support for workers and pensioners, the Akwa Ibom government said it had already paid out 2 billion naira as a bonus to state and local government retirees.
In addition, the government said: “Fridays will become a ticketless day for transport operators and market traders in all local government areas until December 2023.”
It also approved the payment of a 10,000 naira scholarship to university students of Akwa Ibom origin at all public tertiary institutions in Nigeria, as well as the distribution of free exercise books to primary and secondary schools in the state.
“Discussions on means of transport such as CNG buses and electric taxis are ongoing, to ensure effective, efficient and sustainable deployment,” the commissioner said.
