Two individuals, including retired military personnel, found themselves in the custody of the Nigerian Navy after being intercepted with 455 kilograms of marijuana while traveling towards Abuja. The retired soldier, whose identity has not been disclosed, revealed that his involvement in the illicit activity stemmed from financial difficulties preventing him from providing for his children’s education. He confessed to being persuaded by his companion, whom he described as a friend, to participate in the venture, citing desperation due to his dire financial situation.
According to a statement reported by Channels TV, the former military officer recounted the circumstances that led to their arrest, stating that his friend approached him with the opportunity on a Friday, promising a solution to his financial woes. Feeling compelled by his economic struggles and the prospect of earning income, the retired soldier agreed to accompany his friend without fully understanding the nature of the undertaking. He expressed regret over his lack of awareness regarding the illegal nature of the operation, emphasizing that it was his first time engaging in such activities.
The retired soldier stressed on his financial predicament, revealing that his children had been unable to attend school due to his inability to afford their education expenses. This dire situation prompted him to consider alternative means of income, despite the risks involved. His friend’s reassurance and encouragement further persuaded him to embark on the journey, unaware of the severe legal consequences that awaited them.
During their return journey, the duo encountered a naval checkpoint, where their vehicle was subjected to inspection. It was at this point that their illicit cargo was discovered, leading to their immediate arrest by the naval authorities. The retired military personnel expressed shock and remorse upon realizing the gravity of their situation, acknowledging his naivety and ignorance regarding the operation’s illegal nature. He emphasized that the arrest marked his first and only involvement in such criminal activities, further highlighting his lack of prior experience in such endeavors.
