The National Labor Committee (NWC) of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has disputed the alleged suspension of Rabiu Kwankwaso, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate.
This was stated by Ladipo Johnson, the national auditor of the NNPP, at a press conference on Wednesday at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja.
Johnson, a former spokesman for the Kwankwanso Presidential Campaign Council, said the suspension was null and void.
A party faction led by former Governing Body (BoT) Chairman Boniface Aniebonan had suspended Kwankwaso for six months on Tuesday for alleged anti-party activities after a side meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) in Lagos.
He also named a former national publicity secretary for the party, Major Agbo, as acting national president.
But Johnson said Messrs Aniebonam and Agbo were suspended on August 24 for three months for engaging in unsanitary acts before being subsequently expelled from the party.
He added that the NEC party, at its meeting on Tuesday in Abuja, overseen by the Independent National Election Commission (INEC), made certain decisions, including the election of new national officials, the change of the party logo and the expulsion of Merssr Aniebonam and Agbo.
“Isn’t it funny that all these suspended or expelled people get together somewhere and claim to have suspended Kwankwaso and also dissolved the NWC?
“The jokers also named a CTC made up of those people who have ceased to be party members under our constitution.
“Was the INEC at the meeting? Did they write INEC? Who and who signed the letter?
“Isn’t it ridiculous that Major Agbo, who announced the suspension of the former presidents, the expulsion of two of them, and the dissolution of some of the states, is now supposedly ‘heading’ his interim committee,” Johnson said.
It’s a shame that some people have reduced party politics and administration to big jokes.
“The news that a person will sit somewhere and arrogate certain powers to themselves is not allowed in a democracy.
“We are using this outlet to reassure our fans across the country that the story is baseless.
“Kwankwaso is still the face of the match, he has not been suspended and the NWC under Ali remains intact,” he stated.
Johnson, however, admitted that Kwankwaso was invited to meetings by President Bola Tinubu on some issues, saying the meetings were far from anti-partisan activity.
He said that while Mr. Kwankwaso always asked permission before attending such meetings, no conclusions had been reached from the meetings so far.
He also denied the allegation that Kwankwaso had hijacked the party of members who were in it before joining his movement in February 2022.
Johnson, however, said that the party leadership would do everything possible for a possible reconciliation.
Oluwatosin Odeyemi, chairman of the NNPP state presidents’ forum, also spoke, saying the alleged suspension of Mr Kwankwaso was a policy of bitterness.

“Let me remind you that the current secretary of that group was expelled from this party, and Agbo was the one who read that he had been expelled. Agbo attended all the meetings of that committee.
“So you can see that this is a policy of bitterness. Something you read is something you agree with. It wasn’t like you were pressured to read a statement as national publicity secretary.
“So now an expelled person whose explosion you confirm is who you consider to be yours, Secretary,” Odeyemi said.
