In a thrilling 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarter-final clash, Nigeria triumphed over Angola, securing their spot in the semi-finals with a narrow 1-0 victory.
Ademola Lookman emerged as the hero for the Super Eagles, finding the net in the 41st minute after connecting with Moses Simon’s cross. This crucial goal propelled Nigeria to the last four of the tournament.
Angola, eager to reach their first-ever semi-final, displayed early promise with Mabululu’s close-range volley in the fourth minute, denied by a solid save from Nigeria’s goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.
However, it was Lookman who ultimately broke the deadlock, seizing the opportunity created by Simon’s skillful play.
As the game unfolded, Angola nearly equalised around the hour mark when substitute Zine capitalised on a well-timed throughball from Show. Despite beating Nwabali, Zine’s first-time shot struck the post, denying Angola a vital goal.
Victor Osimhen’s header from Lookman’s free-kick was disallowed by VAR due to offside. Nevertheless, the Super Eagles successfully defended their lead, securing their passage to the semi-finals.
With this victory, Nigeria now awaits the outcome of the Cape Verde versus South Africa clash to determine their semi-final opponent.
