A newborn who was recently rescued from a toilet in Anambra State is dead.
Newslodge previously reported how the baby’s mother, Chidinma Nwaedoka, allegedly flushed the child down the toilet.
Ms Nwaedoka, 20, was said to have intentionally carried out the act on Sunday in Otuocha, a community in the Anambra East local government area of the state.
The baby, a boy, was rescued Tuesday, two days after he was thrown into the well bath.
The state Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, was quick to intervene when the incident was brought to her attention.
Ms. Obinabo also took the newborn to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital, Amaku, Awka, for treatment.
The commissioner later arrested the suspect, who hails from the Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, another southeastern state.

Chidinma Ikeanyionwu, the commissioner’s press aide, said in a statement on Thursday that a report of the baby’s death was received on Wednesday, hours after treatment began at the university hospital.
“All efforts to resuscitate the baby, including administration of oxygen and fluids with cardiopulmonary resuscitation by the hospital, are unsuccessful,” he said.
The Anambra government is in mourning
in a video clip Attached to the statement, the state Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mr. Obinabo, said the state government was mourning the baby’s death.
“Yesterday (Wednesday) was not a good day for us at the ministry,” Ms. Obinabo said, looking grim.
“It wasn’t because what gives us joy is that when you do things, at the end of the day, there will be progress and you will be successful,” he explained.
Ms. Obinabo reminded women who commit such acts that they will account for all their actions on earth, while urging them to learn a lesson from Ms. Nwaedoka’s action.
The commissioner advised women not to have premarital sex or to make sure to use protection if they must to avoid unwanted pregnancies.
She asked women who do not want to prevent their babies from having unwanted pregnancies to apply for help at the Ministry of Women’s Affairs in their state and that they will be provided with accommodation if they request it.
“When you ask for refuge, they take you to a place where they keep social morality. Then this child will be given to other people who need them. They will adopt them. The blessings of the Lord will be with you and the law will not come after you,” he said.
