The Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, held a press conference in Abuja on Monday to announce a ban on the importation, manufacture, distribution, sale, and use of alcoholic beverages in sachets, PET, and glass bottles of 200ml and below in Nigeria. Prof Adeyeye stated that as of January 31, 2024, no alcoholic beverage in these categories will be registered by NAFDAC and that the agency has started enforcement actions to ensure compliance with this policy.
The window period given to manufacturers to sell off all alcoholic drinks in this category ended on January 31, 2024. She added that during enforcement actions, it was discovered that some manufacturers were still producing the banned products and still had stocks of both finished products and packaging materials.
NAFDAC considers this a serious matter and will use all statutory means, including prosecution, to deal with it. Therefore, all holders of alcohol in sachets, PET and glass bottles, empty sachets, PET bottles, empty glass bottles, and other packaging materials of these banned products are urged to report to the Investigation and Enforcement Directorate of NAFDAC to hand over these items for destruction to prevent sterner measures.
