In a harrowing case that unfolded at the Mbombela High Court, Nonhlanhla Mthunywa 33 has been sentenced to 28 years in prison for the murder of her mother, Wanter Dlamini 62. The sentencing, delivered on Monday, 29 January, follows Mthunywa’s admission of guilt as part of a plea agreement with the state. Judge Henk Roelofse underscored the severity of the crime by ordering that counts three and seven, about attempted murder and defeating the ends of justice, run concurrently.
The plea agreement reflects Mthunywa acknowledgment of her involvement in a heinous plot that claimed the life of her own mother. The grim events transpired on 5 January, when Dlamini fell victim to a scheme orchestrated by Nonhlanhla.
The court heard that she invited her sister, Bathabile Mthunywa 39, Steen Mashakeng 35, Nombuso Ndwandwa 41, and Moses Mosemba deceased to participate in the murder plot. The motive behind the heinous act was to claim an insurance policy valued at R80,000, which had been taken out in Dlamini’s name in 2019.
