A man was caught trying to throw suspected Indian hemp over the wall of a prison in Kano on Sunday.

It happened around noon at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kurmawa.

A 40 year old man from Janguza Quarters tried to toss the drug into the facility.

Officers from the Armed Squad Unit caught him quickly.

The Nigerian Correctional Service in Kano confirmed the story in a statement on Monday.

Its public relations officer, Musbahu Kofarnassarawa, said the guards acted fast and did their job well.

The Controller of Corrections, Ahmed Yusuf-Lakpene, praised the officers.

He said the command will not tolerate smuggling of banned items into prisons and asked the public to stay away from such acts.

The suspect has been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for further investigation.

This is not the only case of its kind this year.

In August, a woman was caught trying to smuggle drugs into a prison in Ibara, Abeokuta, in Ogun State.
