The woman can be seen smiling and whispering as she unfastens her bike helmet with the elephant in the background beside a tree.
She then walks over to the animal wearing green shorts and a swimming top with her hair still wet, pointing to another one further away.
The elephant is swaying from side to side looking mildly disgruntled.
As it is feeding on some fallen branches beside the tourist, it suddenly swings its trunk and lunges at her, causing her to fall flat on her back with a shriek, before she runs away holding her backside.
The video was posted on X by user Non-aesthetic things. The caption reads: ‘Girl tries to make friends with an elephant and finds out’.
Social media users were quick to comment on the post, with one writing: ‘Fortunate that the juvenile scared her away before that adult charged her.’
Another user posted: ‘Leave wild animals alone.’
Someone else added: ‘Never go close to the elephant when Tail is waging. It feels threatened.’
In April last year, a woman in India was attacked by an elephant after teasing him with a banana.
She daringly held a banana up towards the animal’s mouth before pulling back just as he opened his mouth to chomp.
The young woman could be seen smiling at the elephant as she dangled the fruit in front of her, but he saw through the ruse, swinging his trunk and tusks, causing her to hurtle backwards.
The animal was seemingly angry that the woman was playing games with him, attacking her and causing the person filming the video to recoil in terror, dropping the camera.
Just prior to the attack, the woman could be heard saying: ‘How cool is he?’
Footage of the incident was shared on social media by Susanta Nanda, an Indian Forest Service Officer who often posts intriguing wildlife content online.
He captioned the post: ‘You can’t fool an elephant even though he is tamed. They are one of the most intelligent animals to be in captivity.’
