A former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Lamido Sanusi, is in Niger to meet with junta leaders.
In a picture seen by Newslodge, Mr. Sanusi, former emir of Kano, is seen standing next to junta leader General Abdourahamane Tchiani.
It is not clear in what capacity Mr. Sanusi visited Niger. However, the former monarch is a close ally of Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, who is also the ECOWAS leader.
Mr. Sanusi is also the spiritual leader (Khalifah) of the Tijaniyah Islamic movement in Nigeria, a movement with millions of members in West Africa, including Niger.
Mr. Sanusi was accompanied on the visit, believed to be today (Wednesday), by the Emir of Damagaram in Zinder, in the Maradi region of Niger.
Since the regional body ECOWAS imposed sanctions on Niger after last month’s coup, Tchiani has refused to meet most official delegations sent to the country.
Newslodge reported how he refused to meet with a joint UN, AU and ECOWAS delegation.

Tchiani also refused to meet with an ECOWAS delegation led by former military leader Abdulsalami Abubakar. He also refused to meet with the acting US Assistant Secretary of State, Victoria Nuland.
ECOWAS leaders will meet on Thursday to review the situation in Niger after the expiration of a week-long ultimatum given to the coup leaders to return President Mohamed Bazoum to power.
