A Lagos socialite, Farida Sobowale, was prevented from committing suicide on Thursday.
Ms Sobowale, who is the founder of House of Phreeda, a skin care company, in a viral video, packed up her Lexus SUV on the Third Mainland Bridge in lakes and tried to jump into the lagoon.
The beauty entrepreneur was immediately stopped by some passers-by who held her down and ensured that the attempt was unsuccessful.
Ms. Shobowale, who was wearing a black suit, could be seen crying and trying to try one more time. One of those who held her said that they would take her to the police station.
Her suicide attempt came amid rumors that her marriage, which began with a lavish wedding a few months ago in Lagos, had collapsed.
The wedding was attended by big names in the Nigerian entertainment industry, including Foluke. Daramola, Fatiha BalogunBobrisky, Iyabo Ojo and others.

Following the news of her suicide attempt, some celebrities took to social media to comfort her and show their support.
Iyabo Ojo said that he was on a call with the socialite until he diverted his attention.
“Hmmmm, darling, if I’d known you had this in mind, I wouldn’t have gotten off the phone with you,” he said.
“Of course, you knew what you wanted to do, but you diverted my attention elsewhere; a story for when we see (because you are not going anywhere) thank God for the people who were just in time to save the situation, God bless you, my love, this will definitely pass, the sun will shine again, your tomorrow will be better than you today, but for now just breathe, I love you so much, please stay strong…. I’m praying for you.”
In addition, Nkechi Blessing prayed that Ms. Sobowale would have the strength to carry on.
“Not everyone is strong enough to handle the pressure that comes from being trolled and harassed on Instagram,” said the the actress wrote.
“Dear ma @houseofphreedahbodycare, I pray that God gives you the strength to get through this, it’s a phase and it will pass. I urge her close friends and family to be with her at all times with a close watch; Trust me this will only make you stronger,” the actress wrote.
Nkechi said that if you keep your heart open, “that man who will be by your side until the end of time will definitely find you.”
Crime
The Southern Penal Code Act and the Northern Penal Code of Nigeria consider those who attempt to take their own life as criminals in the category of misdemeanors.
Article 327 of the Penal Code establishes that: “Anyone who attempts to take their own life is guilty of a misdemeanor and may be punished with a prison sentence of one year. ”
Article 231 of the Criminal Code establishes that: “Whoever attempts suicide and performs any act tending to commit such crime, will be punished with imprisonment for up to one year or with a fine or both.”

However, experts have said that the suicide attempt should be completely remote under Nigerian law as a crime and treated as a psychosocial problem that requires a humane solution.
Contacted for more information on the matter, the known phone lines of police spokesman in the state, Benjamin Hundeyin, were busy. He asked to be sent a text, but did not respond in time for this post.
