The Labour Party is currently grappling with a significant challenge as its National Treasurer, Oluchi Oparah, has urged the National Chairman, Julius Abure, to furnish a detailed report on the party’s finances, totaling over N3.5 billion according To vanguard.
These funds were accumulated from the sale of forms and various fundraising activities for the 2023 general elections.
During a press conference in Abuja on Monday, Oparah voiced her frustration over being obstructed by the National Chairman from carrying out her constitutionally mandated responsibility of managing the party’s finances.
She further alleged that Abure has consistently resisted any attempts to scrutinize the party’s financial records since the conclusion of the sale of expression of interest and nomination forms for the 2023 general elections.
This lack of transparency has stirred concerns and exacerbated the existing crisis within the Labour Party.
Addressing the press, Oparah stated, “I come before you today with a heavy heart and a commitment to the principles of transparency, accountability, and justice.
Regrettably, I feel compelled to shed light on the blatant financial mismanagement and corruption that have plagued our esteemed party under the leadership of Mr. Julius Abure, the current National Chairman.
“As the National Treasurer, I find myself compelled to take this public stance as the internal mechanisms of our party have proven ineffective in holding Mr. Abure accountable for his flagrant abuse of power and misappropriation of party funds.
“His unchecked thirst for power has led him to undermine my duties and authority as outlined in the party’s constitution,” Vanguard reported, quoting the Labour Party official.
