In the aftermath of a tragic incident in the Okuama community, Ewu Kingdom, Delta State, hundreds of women and children find themselves stranded in forests, facing dire circumstances without food for six days.
According to Vanguard, The turmoil ensued after Nigerian Army troops launched an assault on the community following the killing of 16 soldiers. The community members, fearing for their lives, fled into the woods, leaving behind their homes and possessions.
The conflict escalated as a young man, suspected to be affiliated with the ongoing unrest, challenged the Federal Government in a viral video, citing oppression as the motive behind the soldiers’ deaths. Meanwhile, in Igbomotoru, Bayelsa State, another community reels under the pressure of a military siege aimed at apprehending a militant leader linked to the violence, exacerbating concerns of a looming humanitarian crisis and potential starvation.
Reports indicate that Okuama remains inaccessible to civilians, with only military personnel granted entry. Governor Sheriff Oborevwori confirmed the severity of the situation, unable to visit the town due to the ongoing military presence. Neighbouring communities, wary of persecution by soldiers, hesitate to offer refuge to the displaced Okuama residents, compounding their plight.
The fleeing women and children, unable to bring food supplies with them, endure hunger and uncertainty in the forests, while soldiers continue to scour surrounding areas for suspects. Residents in adjacent communities live in fear, with military drones monitoring their every move, heightening tensions and disrupting daily life.
