The popular Abuja supermarket, Sahad Stores, was temporarily closed by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) on Friday, February 16, due to an alleged lack of transparency in fixing prices for products.

The FCCPC accused the store of displaying lower prices on shelves while charging higher prices at checkout, which violated transparency and misleading pricing regulations. The FCCPC operatives visited Sahad Stores on February 16, 2024, and confirmed that the deceptive practice was ongoing, leaving customers vulnerable to unfair pricing.

As a result, the commission temporarily sealed the premises under Section 18(f) of the law. However, after reaching a mutual understanding with Sahad Stores, and committing to implement transparent pricing practices, the FCCPC reopened the store around 7 p.m. the same day. The FCCPC emphasized its commitment to protecting consumers’ rights and urged businesses to display transparent pricing information to ensure fair practices in the market.
