A total of 4,387 people died in traffic accidents in the first six months of 2023, an official said. This implies an average of 731 people in a month and about 24 per day.
The Federal Highway Safety Corps (FRSC) said 4,387 people were killed in the 36 states and the FCT. The Corps Public Education Officer, Assistant Corps Marshal Bisi Kazeem said this in an interview with the Nigerian News Agency (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja.
“From January to June, a total of 4,387 people died as a result of traffic accidents. The Corps also recorded 14,108 injuries from the clashes in the same period.
“These crashes occurred as a result of late-night travel, fatigue, enroute violations, dangerous passing, use of worn/expired tires, and speeding.
“And they know that our men do not operate at night, so these drivers take advantage of our absence on the road at night to violate established traffic regulations,” he said.
Kazeem said one of the key reasons for those accidents was that most of them were driven by inexperienced or untrained or partially trained drivers.
This, he said, was discovered through a thorough investigation and investigation.
“Before now, the key problem was their inability to meet basic security standards.
“This required the establishment of commands at Tank Farms to ensure that before any tank truck loads flammable products, it must meet the highest safety standards.
“At the moment, we can reasonably say that the level of compliance, particularly that of the mandatory installation of speed limit devices, although not 100 percent, is quite impressive,” he said.
He explained that the campaign continued and special patrols were organized at intervals to carry out the massive seizure of vehicles whose owners did not comply.
“We still give them a notice of infringement and, in most cases, force them to fix it,” he said.
Kazeem also said that the Corps recorded 14,108 injuries from the accidents and rescued 15,789 people uninjured in traffic accidents in the same period.
He said there was no increase in traffic accidents involving trucks and tankers, but rather a decrease.
However, he said the body recorded a slight increase in fatalities where a reasonable number of people were killed in some accidents.

According to Kazeem, the Corps recorded a total of 4,691 traffic accidents from January to June.
To reduce deaths on the roads, the FRSC chief said the body was engaging truck owners on the need to have a functional on-board camera to monitor drivers’ activities 24 hours a day.
He added that the Corps had also deepened its involvement in installing safety valves on tankers to eliminate all incidences of spillage in the event of a crash.
