Nigeria’s new Minister of Education, Tahir Mamanhas sought the cooperation and support of ministry staff, urging them to be ready to work using the Key Performance Indicator (KPI) for measurement.
Mamman said that he works as a bricklayer, noting that the tasks ahead are enormous.
Shortly after he was sworn in on Monday, Mamman and Minister of State for Education Yusuf Sununu visited the ministry to interact with officials.
They were received by ministry staff, the heads of the ministry’s parastatals and a delegation from Baze University, a private university based in Abuja, Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria, where Mamman stayed until his last appointment, on Vice Chancellor. .

Addressing staff and heads of educational and parastatal agencies, Mr. Mamman described the Ministry of Education as the hub of Nigeria’s development potential.
He admitted that the expectation of the administration led by President Bola Tinubu is huge and vowed to meet the expectations of the Nigerians.
“The expectation is enormous. It’s too much for this government. Our president is fully committed to changing the course of this country,” he said.
Therefore, he commissioned civil servants to help him and Mr. Sununu to move the sector forward.
He added that the well-being of public officials will remain under his supervision.

He said: “I work as a mason. How does a mason work? Every day that he goes to the site, the foreman gives him 100, 200 blocks to put in for that day. At the end of the day, he wants to see the building reach a certain level. So in three months, six months, he builds the house… You have to measure. We will be working with KPIs”.
The new minister said that having worked between 35 and 40 years in government and the private sector, he acknowledges the fact that there are limitations, “but I can assure you to the best of our ability, we will pursue what is due to you as public servants. .”
“I am a committed welfarista,” he declared, adding: “We have to work together. I will emphasize this. I never carry any work in my head. If you have a duty, you have duties. Sometimes you can help your neighbor, your colleague, it’s good to do it.
About the legacy sector
Lords Mamman and Sununu have now inherited the battles left behind by Adamu Adamu and David Opiah, former education minister and state minister for education.
Some of the existing challenges in the sector include the funding of public tertiary institutions, decrepit school facilities, a high number of children out of school, and endless labor disputes among workers in tertiary institutions.
