The Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, has accused Governor Godwin Obaseki of plotting to betray him by installing an “outsider” as his successor. Shaibu made this accusation during an interview on Arise Television’s The Morning Show, where he declared his intention to resist Obaseki’s alleged plans. He stated that the governorship of Edo State should not be given to an outsider and that they would resist any attempt to do so.
Shaibu went on to say that he is running for the election not just by chance, but because his people are interested in it. He claimed to have organic support from people and not support that has been procured using taxpayers’ money, which he believes is what Obaseki is doing.
Shaibu expressed his feeling of betrayal by the Governor, whom he had helped during his second term by contributing political value, finances, and political structure. He said that some biblical verses are made sense to him since this incident started. He added that he would contest the election and defeat Obaseki’s chosen candidate because no human being can stop him.
Governor Obaseki responded by saying that he has no problem with Shaibu’s declaration to run for Governor himself and that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will decide Shaibu’s fate. This clash between the two political figures started early in Obaseki’s second term, and it looks like it is not going to end soon.
