A Senior Advocate Of Nigeria, SAN Ikeazor Akariwe has expressed concerns over the heightened security situations Nigerians face while traveling on the road.
He recounted a disturbing experience on his route to Warri, he narrated how some individuals intentionally scattered nails on the highway, creating a potential hazard.
He revealed how he observed people with cattle in the bushes waiting for vehicles to stop, he stated that he urged his driver to keep moving in order to avoid a potential attack.
He narrated another close-call incident with kidnappers during a road trip to Abuja.
He stated that he was alarmed by the absence of other vehicles on the road and that he had instructed the driver to slow down, only for young men to emerge from the gutter and give their car a hot pursuit. He stated that these unsettling encounters underscored the pervasive insecurity faced during road journeys.
He said in an interview with Channels TV,
”I go to court in Warri but I now fly from Enugu to Abuja and from Abuja to Warri. I do not dare go by road again after my last experience going by road to Warri.
I had an awful experience on the way. Some people strew nails on the highway, I looked in the bush and I saw these people with cattle.
They were waiting for us to stop, I told my driver do not stop, keep moving. It was fortunate for me that I looked into the bush.
Another time I was coming to Abuja by road. Sometimes I like traveling by road reading newspapers and books that I have been longing to read. Only to get to a point on the highway after Abaji, I saw that there was nobody else on the road and I told the driver to slow down. And as he slowed down, young men began to jump out of the gutter between the two lanes and began to chase after us. The insecurity is everywhere.”
