The Nigerian military has said no money was taken when its military vehicle was attacked by armed robbers on Wednesday in Benin. Army Public Relations Deputy Director Yemi Sokoya, in a statement Friday in Benin, said media reports suggested that the thugs who took away the Ghana-Must-Go bags containing money were inaccurate.
Sokoya, an army captain who is a public relations officer for the Nigerian Army’s 4th Brigade in Benin, said efforts are underway with other security agencies to arrest the suspects and bring them to justice.
“The attention of the Nigerian Army (AN) has been drawn to a number of inaccurate narratives in the media regarding an attack on a Hilux military vehicle on Akpakpava road by some armed men on Wednesday 23 August 2023. .
“Contrary to various reports, a 4th Brigade Finance office employee and a driver went into town to fix the office printer and also stopped at wema bank to process and collect a bank statement.

“The armed gang in a red Toyota Camry car, which must have followed them and noticed that the soldiers were not armed, opened fire on the vehicle, at a traffic light junction, probably thinking that the soldiers were carrying money.
“But when they found the vehicle was empty, they drove away. Unfortunately, some of the bullets hit the driver in the chest and he died.
“Many reports have hinted that the armed robbers made off with a huge amount of cash in a Ghana-Must-Go bag. This is completely false, since it was not cash,” the army spokesman said.
