Adebiyi Adeyeye, the National President of the union, reiterated the union’s stance in an interview, emphasizing their warning to the government.
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission raised electricity prices for customers who receive 20 hours of power daily. These customers, categorized as Band A, saw their rates rise from N66 per kilowatt-hour to N225 per kilowatt-hour.
The union had previously warned the government to reverse the price hike, stating that if it didn’t address the high cost of electricity, the NUEE would take strong action, including withdrawing its members from duties. This action aims to protect their members’ livelihoods.
Adeyeye explained that providing 20 hours of electricity isn’t feasible with the current infrastructure. He emphasized the dangers of collecting fees for services that aren’t being adequately provided and highlighted the challenges faced by union members, including attacks from customers and unrealistic expectations set by the government. He stressed that the union is advising the government to take necessary actions before they resort to withdrawing their services.
The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, appealed to the union not to withdraw its members, stating that the government is working to improve power supply and create jobs. He urged the union to understand the reasons behind the price adjustments and emphasized that it’s for the nation’s benefit.
Adelabu pleaded with the union to bear with the government as these steps are taken to address challenges in the power sector and ultimately benefit the nation’s economy.
