A family in Anambra State has forcibly taken two underage children from a widow, Sharon Nwosu, after accusing her of killing her husband.
Chidinma Ikeanyionwu, a press assistant to the state Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, revealed this in a statement on Saturday.
Ikeanyionwu said the incident occurred in Ndiowu, a community in the northern Orumba local government area of the state. However, he did not mention when it happened.
He said two women who allegedly seized the widow’s children were arrested.
The two suspects have been identified as Felicia Nwosu, the widow’s mother-in-law, and Chinenye Nwosu, her sister-in-law, according to the statement.
The arrest of the two suspects came in response to a complaint filed with the ministry by the distraught widow, Ikeanyionwu said.

The couple lived in Ikorodu, in Lagos State, in southwestern Nigeria, but the widow moved to the Ndiowu community after her husband’s death.

She said the family started fighting with her after she refused to hand over her late husband’s laptop and mobile phone to her husband’s younger brother Ifeanyi, who demanded them.
The family had warned her not to tell anyone about her application, she said.

Ms. Sharon expressed her surprise that the family made such a request a few days after her husband’s death, adding that she insisted that such a request should wait until after her husband had been buried.
The widow said the family ordered her to hand over the properties to the younger brother so that he could take over the contract from her late husband, who was an architect.
While struggling with the death of her husband, she was informed that her ailing mother also died that same day.
The widow said that before the family forcibly took her children away, she was deeply pained by being constantly told that she was responsible for their father’s death.
According to her, the family broke into her apartment after her husband’s funeral and took all the money that some supporters had given her.

The state Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ms. Obinabo, has expressed her dissatisfaction over the incident, said Ms. Ikeanyionwu.
Mrs. Obinabo assured the widow that she would help her get her children back from the family.
In the video, the commissioner regrets that in several families women are always responsible for the hardships of their companions.
“Women will always be where other women are treated and they will not speak, but they will support the act. It can be you tomorrow. When will women begin to love their fellow men? she said.
Meanwhile, the two arrested suspects were taken to the State Criminal Investigation Department, where they were given a letter ordering them to appear before the commissioner on Tuesday, according to the statement.
The suspects were to appear before the commissioner with all parties involved in the matter for investigation.
